Stand Up!
The success for The Unite for Change Campaign lies in each of you. Below are some of the initiatives we have seen and often participated in around this great nation of ours. Make Unite for Change Uniquely Yours
- Hand out anything that promotes your mission- pens, popcorn bags, condoms or soda cans that encourage consent.
- Wear and distribute ribbons for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
- Create a Wall of Healing, allowing Survivors or friends and loved ones of survivors to create and display art, poetry, and personal messages.
- Host a panel of experts from all areas of campus and community life who can talk about creating a violence free community.
- Educate yourselves and your campus on the dangers of the date rape drugs and dispel the many myths associated with them. Good information available at www.4woman.gov/faq/rohypnol.htm
- Host a self-defense program to teach and empower your community.
- Show movies on campus or in your community that start the conversation about sex and sexual assault.
- Ask your counseling center on campus or a mental professional to speak about the effects of assault on a person and the process of becoming a survivor. Also share and promote the many wonderful things your counseling center can offer.
- Invite national speakers, authors and experts to tell their story and to inspire your community.
Unite Year Round
- Invite men to be a part this movement. They too care deeply about ending sexual violence.
- Work with or start a Students Against Sexual Assault coalition on campus. Use peer theatre and peer education to reach others. Visit www.bacchusandgamma.org for additional ideas and excellent information.
- Create a campus or community publication where people can submit original works on sexual responsibility, sexual empowerment and sexual healing.
- Create a campus or community web site that educates, informs and empowers!
- Talk to your community about cyber-safety. Visit www.iSAFE.org for more information.
- Stand up and speak out against violence year round.
- Volunteer to teach younger children about healthy relationships.
- Educate your community about the reality of alcohol and the danger of mixing sex and alcohol.
- On campus make anonymous violence report forms available as well as an electronic version so students can report the incident and make their voice heard (anonymously if they choose).
- Reach out to your Judicial Officers on campus to learn how they represent students on campus and work with them to help promote their services.
- Explore sexual assault and harassment policies that are specific to your campus. Make sure they meet your students/peers needs. If not, work to update them.
- Learn what resources exist in your community and create a guide that is easy to find and understand.
- If unsatisfactory resources exist — FIGHT FOR THEM!
MOST IMPORTANTLY, don't be afraid to create your own solution!
